The 'open weave' method is a variation of the Twined basket.
The uprights (stakes) become a feature of the basket, as they are left to create a delightful lacey effect.
We'll use 'Tall spike rush' to make this basket often referred to by its latin name 'eleocharis', its a real favourite of many basket weavers.
The start of the basket, the base, is made in the same way as for a twined basket, with the difference being that the sides are deliberately not tightened up as the weave progresses upwards. This allows for creative shapes to develop, depending on how tight or loose the consecutive rows are.
The workshop will include instruction in:
material preparation
setting up the framework
how to ‘twine’ around the frame
detailed steps in finishing the rim.
Discussion on the history of traditional and contemporary basket making is all part of the day. Examples of baskets will be on hand to help describe the different methods available to basketmakers. You are most welcome to bring along to the workshop any baskets you might have that would be of interest.
